Starting in 1990, the Smart Wood Program of the Rainforest Alliance began supporting community forestry operations through independent forest management certification. This certification has reinforced the communities' strong desire to maintain their forest, at the same time attempting to increase the economic and financial value of the products from these forests. Initial Smart Wood certifications occurred in Mexico and similar efforts are now underway in the northeastern US and interest has been expressed in New Brunswick, Canada. Though certified community forest operations in Mexico have made impressive improvements in their forest management practices, these operations are encountering major problems in trying to deliver their product to the market, to the point where it is challenging the economic viability. Problem areas where assistance is needed include the development of financially viable business management and strategic market plans, product delivery systems, and communications and promotional campaigns. This project will provide technical assistance directly to community based forestry operations in the marketing of forest products which come from environmentally and socially sound, independently certified operations.
