Ecological craft production and sustainable managment and use of the forest in two communities in the Purepecha region

Ecological craft production and sustainable managment and use of the forest in two communities in the Purepecha region

Mexico

Received C$ 83400 in 1997

Sustainable forest management is essential for communities whose livelihoods are completely dependent on wood. In the Purepecha region where the majority of the indigenous communities are employed in small-scale carpentry and pottery, this management does not end with the forest itself. They must also consider the sustainabilty of their production processes (reducing wastage, fuel-efficiency of kilns, adding maximum value through their craftsmanship) and their markets. This project integrates all of these concerns to ensure that the ecological health of the forest and the economic well-being of its inhabitants are enhanced.
