OVERVIEW: The Monday Creek watershed of the Hocking River Basin study area encompasses 116 square miles of Perry, Athens and Hocking Counties, Ohio. Extensive portions of the Monday Creek watershed have been subjected to underground and surface mining. Severe acid mine drainage has degraded over 100 miles of streams in the area. A number of stream reaches are essentially sterile and unable to support diverse aquatic life. The project being implemented is construction of various restoration activities to improve the overall ecosystem. Environmental restoration activities include limited stream restoration, wetland creation and wildlife habitat restoration involving both active and passive treatment of acid mine drainage. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is the non-Federal sponsor.
Project Status: The feasibility study is complete and was approved by the Civil Works Review Board for inclusion in the Chief's Report in September 2005. Authorization for construction was in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) '07, and an Omnibus Bill signed on 26 December 2007, appropriated $282,000 in federal Preconstruction Engineering and Design (PED) funds to initiate the PED phase. Congressional authorization is still required for the Corps to use its funds to do work on U.S. Forest Service lands. |

POINTS OF EMPHASIS:
- The Monday Creek Restoration Project, a local citizens group, is working closely with the Corps of Engineers to improve Monday Creek Watershed.
- West Virginia University has developed a Total Acid Mine Drainage Load (TAMDL) computer model to model the results of various remedial treatments.
- The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory provided technical oversight and contract administration of the West Virginia University model study.
