Dolly Sods Educational Materials

The Dolly Sods educational material is the cornerstone of the public outreach and safety campaign spearheaded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District. These materials were developed to benefit all of the major stakeholders of the Dolly Sods area by promoting unexploded ordnance (UXO) awareness and safety.

The kids animated presentation and children’s brochure feature the character “Wally the Woodchuck” explaining the “3 Important Rules of UXO Safety” in a fun and easy way. The educational video provides site history, describes the important role Dolly Sods played in WWII, and features USACE team members explaining the clean-up efforts. The video is an extremely important tool for educators, first responders and visitor centers. The train the trainer presentation was specifically developed to educate teachers, first responders, law enforcement and other community leaders about UXO safety at Dolly Sods. The adult brochure and presentation employ the same simple message used for children, but also features beautiful photos of the Dolly Sods area, real pictures of UXO, and an explanation of FUDS and USACE activities. The trails map is an essential element that did not exist before the completion of this campaign.
