1 Mr. Sherick, was sworn in as the first Inspector General on May 20, 1983. The Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense (Review and Oversight), the precursor organization to the Office of Inspector General (IG, DOD), was established on April 20, 1981. The Assistant to the Secretary was Mr. Joseph H. Sherick.

2 Mr. Vander Schaaf was also the de facto Acting IG from June 1985 to June 3, 1986, while Mr. Sherick was on extended sick leave. Mr. Vander Schaaf did not use the title of Acting Inspector General and remained Deputy Inspector General.
