Dredged Material, Sediment, and Watershed Managers to Work Together
October 12, 2006 - Over 200 people participated in the recent conference on Managing Sediments in the Watershed:  Bringing dredged material, sediment and watershed managers together.   The conference, held in Portland, Oregon, August 28-31, provided a unique opportunity for dialogue among a diverse array of stakeholders who don’t often have the chance to meet, share ideas and experiences, or work together to address interrelated programs, projects, and concerns. The participants represented a wide range of sediment management perspectives.

USACE IWR Scientist Elected to Chair ICHARM Advisory Board
September 25 , 2006 -Dr. Eugene Z. Stakhiv, a water resources specialist at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Institute for Water Resources (IWR), was elected to be chairman of the Advisory Board of the International Center for Water Hazards and Risk Management (ICHARM) last week at the Official Opening Ceremony and Commemorative Symposium at United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan.

USACE IWR Scientist Appointed to ICHARM Advisory Board
September 13 , 2006 -Dr. Eugene Z. Stakhiv, a water resources specialist at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Institute for Water Resources (IWR), has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the International Center for Water Hazards and Risk Management (ICHARM), located in Tsukuba, Japan. He will be participating in the inaugural meeting of the Advisory Board at the ICHARM Official Opening Ceremony and Commemorative Symposium on 14-15 September 2006 at United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan.

IWR Director Joins ICHARM Director Kuniyoshi Takeuchi in Signing Memorandum of Understanding
August 29 , 2006 - IWR Director Robert A. Pietrowsky and UNESCO IHP International Center for Water Hazards and Risk Management (ICHARM) Director Kuniyoshi established partnership documenting the mutual interest that PWRI - ICHARM and USACE IWR have in reducing damages from floods and coastal storms through an integrated flood management strategy during the 17th Intergovernmental Council Meeting of UNESCO-IHP held in Paris 3-7 July 2006.

Pete Rabbon Manages National Flood Risk Management Program Initiative
June 30, 2006 - Pete Rabbon has joined IWR to manage the new Corps National Flood Risk Management Program Initiative. Rabbon joined the Institute under an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) exchange agreement with the State of California Department of Water Resources.

Richard N. Palmer Receives Julian Hinds Water Resources Development Award
June 30, 2006 - Richard N. Palmer was awarded the 2006 Julian Hinds Water Resources Development Award for "conceptual and practical contributions to the effectiveness of structured engineering analyses and participatory methods in the management of conflict in water resources, including 'Shared Vision Planning', and for methods addressing the potential impacts of climate change."

IWR Participates in World Water Forum
May 5, 2006 - This year’s Fourth World Water Forum www.worldwaterforum.org hosted in Mexico City counted about 13,000 participants. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and its Institute for Water Resources, was part of a U.S. delegation of 78 members representatives of various U.S. government agencies.

IWR Director Robert Pietrowsky Named to National IHP Committee
April 24, 2006 - IWR Director Robert Pietrowsky is among the charter group of water resources specialists named to the recently reconstituted U.S. National IHP (International Hydrological Programme) Committee. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of six U.S. Federal agencies represented on the Committee, with the agencies invited based on their expertise and interest in water resources sciences and water management.

Shore Evaluation Assessment
February 16, 2006 - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as authorized by Congress, announced their initiative to complete their shore evaluation assessment by 2007. This assessment will focus on how federal shore protection projects performed in the wake of hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne in 2004.  This study will not evaluate policy but it is hoped that the outcomes of this project will affect future policy related to shore protection.
