IWR Hosts USACE-USGS Quarterly Meeting, Participates in Subcommittee on Water Availability and Quality

ALEXANDRIA, VA – April 25, 2008. IWR hosted the quarterly meeting between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on March 26,2008. Representatives from the Bureau of Reclamation also attended.

Topics included stream gauging, climate change, the Western States Watershed Study, Western States Water Council liaison, Great Lakes study and Great Lakes gauging. Also under discussion were an update of Bulletin 17B, partnering on the upcoming 27 June UNESCO Water Symposium (Washington, D.C.), and the World Water Forum in March 2009. The USACE-USGS-BuRec Interagency group presented an annotated outline for the “National Water Program Strategy: Response to Climate Change” technical report on "best" practices for water agencies for adaptations to climate change.

IWR’s Rolf Olson and Julie Chaing of USGS attended the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Subcommittee on Water Availability and Quality (SWAQ), co-chaired by Bob Hirsch, USGS. The meeting included briefings on the interagency report and a presentation on the Interior Water for America program, including USGS water census. SWAQ is advocating for a study on water demand and availability.
