Western Region Geography has developed the Land Use Portfolio Model as a tool for estimating and comparing the costs and benefits of different spatially specific investments to reduce risk in communities. It is currently being tested in Ventura County, Calif., to provide county decisionmakers with cost and risk tradeoffs for different earthquake-mitigation strategies.
