CEC requests Mexico’s response to La Ciudadela Project submission

Montreal, 3/07/2008 – Yesterday, the Secretariat of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) issued a determination requesting a response from Mexico to submission SEM-08-001 (La Ciudadela Project), filed with the Secretariat on 22 February 2008, by the Instituto de Derecho Ambiental, Asociación Vecinal Jardines del Sol and Colonos de Bosques de San Isidro (the “Submitters”). The Submitters assert that Mexico is failing to effectively enforce its environmental law in connection with a contaminated site located in Zapopan, Jalisco, on which construction the La Ciudadela development is being pursued by SSC Inmobiliaria.

The Secretariat has requested a response from Mexico with respect to the alleged failure to effectively enforce its environmental law applicable to real estate transfers of La Ciudadela development site, which is allegedly contaminated with hazardous waste.

Mexico has up to 60 days to submit its response. Thereafter, the Secretariat will review the submission in light of Mexico’s response to determine whether it warrants developing a factual record.
