CEC allows 30 days to submit a revised submission on drilling waste treatment project in Tabasco

Montreal, 17/09/2007 – On 12 September 2007, the Secretariat of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) made public its determination concluding that submission SEM-07-005 (Drilling Waste in Cunduacán) does not meet all admissibility requirements under Article 14 of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). The Secretariat granted the submitters a period of 30 days to file a revised submission.

The submission was filed on 26 July 2007, by the Tabasco Human Rights Committee (Comité de Derechos Humanos de Tabasco), the Santo Tomas Environmental Association (Asociación Ecológica Santo Tomás), and the community of Los Aguilares, (the “Submitters”). The Submitters assert that Mexico is failing to effectively enforce its environmental laws with respect to a sludge treatment and disposal project in the municipality of Cunduacán, Tabasco. The Secretariat determined that the submission does not provide sufficient information for an examination, nor does it identify the applicable environmental law pursuant to NAAEC.
