CEC requests a response from Mexico to Ex Hacienda El Hospital II Submission

Montreal, 30/08/2006 – The Secretariat of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) issued today a determination requesting a response from Mexico to submission SEM-06-003 (Ex Hacienda El Hospital II), filed with the Secretariat on July 17 by Myredd Alexandra Mariscal Villaseñor and nine other residents of the Ex Hacienda El Hospital community in Cuautla, Morelos (the “Submitters”). The Submitters allege that Mexico is failing to effectively enforce its environmental law with respect to alleged environmental infractions related to the operation, closing and dismantling of a paint pigment manufacturing plant operated by BASF Mexicana, S.A. de C.V.

Mexico has up to 60 days to provide its response. Thereafter, the Secretariat will review the submission in light of Mexico’s response to determine whether it warrants development of a factual record.
