Montreal, 18/06/2004 – Alberto Cárdenas Jiménez, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), will host his environmental colleagues from Canada and the United States at a meeting in Puebla, Mexico, on 22–23 June.
The environment ministers of Canada, Mexico and the United States form the governing Council of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), a trinational organization created under a side accord to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
The two-day, annual meeting will direct the work of the CEC and identify opportunities and challenges for enhancing environmental cooperation. The Council is expected to consider the report of the Ten-year Review and Assessment Committee released this week, which reviewed the operations of the CEC over the last decade, and examine future directions for the organization.
The meeting will be attended by Secretary Cárdenas, US Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Leavitt and Environment Canada Assistant Deputy Minister Norine Smith. Environment Minister David Anderson was unable to attend due to a 28 June federal election in Canada.
