CEC Council and JPAC sessions set to begin on 23 June 2003

Montreal, 6/11/2002 – A date and venue have been confirmed for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation's (CEC) tenth annual Council session and concurrent CEC meetings. On 24-25 June 2003, the Council will meet in Washington, DC, to direct the programs of the CEC and receive public input. The Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC), which advises the Council, will begin its three-day regular session by holding a public workshop with the CEC Enforcement Working Group on 23 June. All events will be held at the Mayflower Hotel.

The Council, the governing body of the CEC, is composed of David Anderson, Minister of Environment for Canada; Victor Lichtinger, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources for Mexico; and Christine Todd Whitman, Administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency.

The CEC was established by the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation to build cooperation among the partners of the North American Free Trade Agreement--Canada, Mexico and the United States--in addressing environmental issues of common concern, with a particular focus on the environmental opportunities and challenges presented by continent-wide free trade.
