Council appoints Acting Executive Director

Montreal, 15/07/2002 – The Council of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) of North America-composed of Canadian Environment Minister David Anderson, Mexican Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources Victor Lichtinger, and Governor Christine Todd Whitman, Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency-has appointed Victor Shantora to serve as acting executive director of the CEC Secretariat until a new executive director is appointed. The next executive director will be from the US and a national search is being conducted by Council under the management of the United States.

Victor Shantora has been heading the Pollutants and Health Program Area of the CEC since early 2001 and was appointed interim director of programs last May. Prior to joining the CEC, Victor Shantora was with Environment Canada for the past 26 years, where he held senior policy and technical positions in a variety of sectors.

The CEC was established by Canada, Mexico and the United States to build cooperation among the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners in implementing the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC), the environmental side accord to NAFTA.
