Montreal, 26/06/2002 – It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing last week of John Wirth. Dr. Wirth had been a member of the Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) of North America since 1994.
He was president of the North American Institute, a trinational public affairs group headquartered in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was a distinguished professor at Stanford University, and an acknowledged expert on matters pertaining to transboundary impact assessment, transborder air pollution, smelter smoke, and cross-cultural issues.
Dr. Wirth was highly respected colleague and mentor to all of us on JPAC and at the CEC.
The CEC was established by Canada, Mexico and the United States to build cooperation among the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners in implementing NAAEC, the environmental side accord to NAFTA. The CEC addresses environmental issues of continental concern, with particular attention to the environmental challenges and opportunities presented by continent-wide free trade.
JPAC is a 15-member, independent, volunteer body that provides advice and public input to Council on any mater within the scope of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation.
