CEC Launches New Research Tool: theTransboundary Agreements Infobase

Montreal, 11/08/1998

The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) has launched a new Transboundary Agreements Infobase, which gives Internet users free and unrestricted access to agreements and treaties on transboundary environmental cooperation in North America. The Infobase is part of the CEC's efforts to provide information that promotes North American cooperation on environmental issues that affect the entire region.

Users can search the database by subject, agreement name, or by parties to the agreements. A complete list of agreements—there are approximately 200 individual agreements currently in the database—is also available for users to browse through. In addition, the database provides hyperlinks to the full text of the agreements, as well as to other Internet sites that provide additional information related to the agreements.

While the major treaties and agreements between the countries of North America may be fairly well-known, numerous other agreements exist involving state-state and state-province cooperation, as well as a number of arrangements between local or regional authorities along the borders. By including such a broad range of agreements, the database demonstrates the extent and complexity of transboundary environmental cooperation in North America. It covers virtually all aspects of regional environmental policy: water management, air pollution, wildlife and conservation, waste management, industrial and natural hazards. Much of the information in this database is not readily available in any other location, making it a truly unique resource.
