JPAC Bulletin: Nomination of Mr. Cam Avery to the JPAC

Montreal, 28/06/2000 – The Chair of Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), Ms. Regina Barba, is pleased to announce that Mr. David Anderson, the Canadian Environment Minister, has appointed a new JPAC member from Canada, Mr. Cam Avery.

"I am very pleased to have Mr. Avery join JPAC. His expertise in public affairs will certainly contribute to an innovative and productive dialogue with North American citizens," said Ms. Barba.

Mr. Avery is Director of Public Affairs for BC Gas Utility Ltd., the principal natural gas distribution company in British Columbia. His public affairs group at BC Gas has received the Pacific Coast Gas Association gold medal for its public consultation work in siting major projects. Mr. Avery also represents BC Gas on the Standing Committee on Public and Environmental Affairs in the Canadian Gas Association. He has been a member and chairperson of this committee and its predecessors in the Canadian Gas Association for ten years.

The CEC was established by the NAFTA partners, Canada, Mexico and the United States, under the terms of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC), the environmental side accord to NAFTA. The CEC addresses environmental issues of continental concern, with particular attention to the environmental challenges and opportunities presented by continent-wide free trade.

JPAC is a 15-member, independent, volunteer body that provides advice and public input to Council on any matter within the scope of NAAEC.
