Liette Vasseur elected chair of the Joint Public Advisory Committee of the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation

Montreal, 30/11/2000 – On behalf of the Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) and members of the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (NACEC), Regina Barba, the JPAC Chair for 2000, announced that Liette Vasseur from Halifax, Nova Scotia has been elected chair of JPAC for 2001. Ms. Vasseur is associate professor in the Department of Biology and Environmental Studies at Saint Mary's University, where she also serves as coordinator of the Environmental Studies Program.

Ms. Barba stated that "we are fortunate to have a great team and I am sure that under the leadership and the experience of Ms. Vasseur, the year 2001 will be hugely successful."

The Chair is elected by Committee members for a one-year term and by rotation from among the JPAC members appointed for each country. Ms. Vasseur’s mandate starts on 1 January 2001.

NACEC was established by Canada, Mexico and the United States to build cooperation among the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners in implementing the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC), the environmental side accord to NAFTA. NACEC addresses environmental issues of continental concern, with particular attention to the environmental challenges and opportunities presented by continent-wide free trade.

JPAC is a 15-member, independent, volunteer body that provides advice and public input to Council on any matter within the scope of NAAEC.

The public can contact JPAC members anytime through JPAC's web page <http://www.cec.org/jpac>, or share points of view through CECNet, an independent forum for online discussions about NACEC at <http://udallcenter.arizona.edu/listservs/cecnet.html>.
