East Maui Geologic Data Sets

Geochemistry

Published and some unpublished data for whole-rock geochemistry, including major-element, trace-element, and isotopic analyses, have been compiled by the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Hawai`i. The data for all of Maui, as well as the other volcanoes in the Hawaiian Island chain, may be downloaded from the Museum's Hawai`i Volcano Geochemical Data Sets listing. A separate bibliography includes full references to the data in those tables.

Carbon-14 ages

Many east Maui lava flows younger than about 40,000 years have been dated indirectly by dating charcoal found beneath them. The ages may be viewed in table pdf format (see map of locations and references shown in table).

Potassium-argon and 40Ar/39Ar ages

Lava flows of the Kula Volcanics and Honomanu Basalt on east Maui have been dated by K-Ar and 40Ar/39Ar methods. These data encompass the oldest lava flows known from east Maui, which are as old as 1.1 million years. Ages in the range from 0.9 to 0.4 million years have been obtained from the flanks of the volcano. The ages may be viewed in tabular or map format. References for isotopic ages are listed separately.
