American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 2008 – Afghan and coalition forces killed 17 armed militants and detained 10 suspects yesterday during operations targeting the Haqqani and Hizb-e-Islami Gulbuddin terrorist networks in Paktia and Kabul provinces, military officials said.

In Zadran district, Afghan and coalition forces killed one militant and detained ten suspects, including a targeted Haqqani foreign terrorist, during a combined operation in Paktia province. The now-detained militant is linked to the movement of Islamic Jihadist Union (IJU) and other foreign fighters into Afghanistan. During the search of the compounds the combined U.S.-Afghan force killed one militant who’d threatened them with a grenade.

Coalition and Afghan forces engaged and killed 16 armed militants during a second anti-terrorist operation conducted that day in Sorobi district.

In Nov. 28 operations, coalition forces killed four Taliban fighters, including Haji Yakub, a targeted commander who was dressed as a woman, during an operation to disrupt the Taliban’s roadside-bomb and foreign-fighter networks in Ghanzni province. A search of the compound revealed multiple AK-47 assault rifles and other military equipment.
