U.S., Iraqi Forces Seize Suspects, Weapons in Baghdad Raids

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30, 2008 – U.S. soldiers detained three suspected criminals and seized an explosive projectile, while a joint U.S.-Iraqi police operation found a weapons cache containing automatic rifles during operations conducted across Baghdad yesterday, military officials said.

The three detainees were captured during a U.S. operation in southern Baghdad’s Rashid district.

A joint U.S.-Iraqi police operation conducted in Baghdad’s East Rashid district yielded 13 AK-47 automatic rifles and a sniper rifle. Later, U.S. soldiers patrolling northern Baghdad discovered another weapons cache containing a 130 mm projectile.

In Nov. 28 operations:

U.S. soldiers detained a known Special Groups criminal wanted for financing attacks against coalition forces during an operation in southern Baghdad’s Rashid District.

Iraqi National Police seized a munitions cache in the Baghdad’s Risalah sector. The cache contained rocket-propelled grenade launchers, RPG rounds, anti-personnel rockets, rocket initiators, machine-gun ammunition and bomb-making materials.

Following a local citizen’s tip, U.S. soldiers detained six suspected criminals and seized nearly $76,000 in U.S. currency and almost 40 million Iraqi dinar during an operation in eastern Baghdad.

Coalition forces detained two suspected al-Qaida terrorists during an operation in Iraq's Diyala province.

Iraqi soldiers captured two suspected al-Qaida terrorists during operations in Bulayj in northern Iraq. One of the detainees is believed to be the leader of a newly-formed direct terror cell operating in the area.

U.S. soldiers detained a suspected terrorist linked to roadside bomb attacks on U.S. forces during an operation near the Tarmiyah joint security station in northern Baghdad.

In Nov. 27 operations:

Acting on a citizen’s tip, U.S. soldiers captured a suspected criminal during a raid in the Thawra neighborhood, part of Baghdad’ Sadr-City section. The detainee is an alleged Special Groups terrorist accused of setting roadside bombs.

U.S. soldiers detained five suspected criminals in northern Baghdad’s Adhamiyah district. The detainees are linked to a recent string of improvised explosive device attacks and assassination attempts in eastern Baghdad.

Iraqi Special Weapons and Tactics teams captured three suspected al-Qaida terrorists operating within the Baqubah area. The detainees are linked to terrorist operations and safe havens in the area.

Iraqi Special Operations Forces arrested three suspected al Qaida members during an operation in east Mosul. The detainees are linked to an assassination cell and
are also suspected of killing local citizens and Iraqi forces.
