SMITHFIELD, R.I., Feb. 1, 2002 – "In the unlikely event" the St. Louis Rams win the Super Bowl Feb. 3, Bryant College President Ronald K. Machtley said here, look for him to sport a temporary U.S. Marine Corps tattoo while 12 of his students parade around campus for a day in Western Illinois University sweatshirts.
If the New England Patriots win, Western Illinois' President David Taylor will be wearing a temporary U.S. Navy tattoo and his dutiful dozen, Bryant sweatshirts for a day. Machtley, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and a retired Naval Reserve captain, and Taylor, a former Marine, went public with their challenge today. Bryant is home of the Patriots' summer training camp. The Rams hold their summer practice in Macomb, Ill., at Taylor's Western Illinois, the only nonmilitary institution in the country allowed by law to use the Marine Corps mascot and Fighting Leatherneck designation.
