WASHINGTON, March 1, 2003 – A veteran Central Intelligence Agency executive will head the Terrorist Threat Integration Center slated to start operations May 1.
CIA Director George J. Tenet appointed John O. Brennan, a 23-year agency veteran, as director of the TTIC, according to a March 11 CIA press release. Brennan, 47, has been the CIA's deputy executive director since March 2001. He also served as Tenet's chief of staff for two years. Under Brennan's leadership the TTIC "will serve as the U.S. government hub for all terrorist threat-related analytic work," the CIA director said in the release. In his State of the Union address in January, President Bush announced the TTIC's formation as a storehouse and clearinghouse of U.S. government-collected threat information and analysis, which would be rapidly shared across departments. The center will bring together elements of the departments of Homeland Security and Defense, the FBI's counterterrorism division, the director of central intelligence's counterterrorist center, and other federal agencies. The appointment was made in consultation with the FBI director, the attorney general, and the secretaries of Homeland Security and Defense.
