VA Salutes Ross Perot
VA Secretary James B. Peake presented business leader, veteran and veterans’ advocate Ross Perot a special award on Jan. 7 in appreciation for Perot’s decades of support for America’s military service members, veterans, their families and survivors. In presenting the award, Peake said of Perot, “In a lifetime of behind–the–scenes service to care for those who have defended our nation, he has redefined the term veterans advocate.” (more)

Florida Veterans
VA has mailed disability verification letters to more than 265,000 Florida veterans and surviving spouses who may be eligible for state or local tax exemptions. Some state tax laws provide veterans and their surviving spouses with state, county or local tax relief. VA helps veterans receive these benefits by providing letters verifying their military service and disability evaluations. Last year, VA paid nearly $2.9 billion in compensation and pensions to eligible Florida veterans and surviving spouses. (more)

Payment to Surviving Spouses
VA recently learned of a problem in which some surviving spouses did not receive a compensation or pension payment they should have received for the month of a veteran’s death. VA has identified nearly 11,000 surviving spouses of deceased veterans who will receive payments to correct the error and is continuing to look for other eligible survivors. Surviving spouses who believe they may be entitled to this retroactive month–of–death benefit are encouraged to call the Survivors’ Call Center toll–free at 1–800–749–8387. (more)
