Council Member

Jim Prentice

Jim Prentice was elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and re-elected in 2006 and 2008. He was named Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians in February 2006 and Minister of Industry in August 2007.

A lawyer by profession, Mr. Prentice has specialized in property rights and has focused on relocations, environmental protection suits and restricted development areas. He also served as a commissioner of the Indian Specific Claims Commission of Canada for 10 years and is recognized by his peers as an expert in land claims negotiations. Mr. Prentice travelled to South Africa twice as an expert advisor on how to protect property rights in that country’s new constitution.

Mr. Prentice graduated from the University of Alberta and holds a law degree from Dalhousie University.

Mr. Prentice has lived in Calgary for over 20 years with his wife Karen and their three daughters.

Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada was born in Mexico City, Federal District, 11 April 1958.

Graduated as an agricultural engineeer from the Undergraduate Faculty, Cuautitlan Campus, associated wtih the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México; received a master’s degree in agricultural engineering (agricultural mechanization) from the Cranfield Institute of Technology, Bedfordshire, England.

Served as president of the board of the Parque Nacional “Barranca del Cupatitzio,” from April 1997 to July 1998.

Municipal president in city hall of Uruapan, Michoacán, from January 1999 to December 2001.

Representative from Profepa to the state of Michoacán from April 2001 to September 2003. Director General for the Primary and Natural Renewable Resources Sector (Semarnat) from September 2003 to June 2004.

Undersecretary for Development and Environmental Standardization of Semarnat from June 2004 to June 2005.

Since 1 July 2005, he has served as subprocurator for industrial inspection for the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa).

Council Member

Stephen L. Johnson became Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on 29 April 2005. He assumed the position with the stated goal of promoting and maintaining the utilization of sound science while using collaborative, innovative approaches to solving environmental problems.

Mr. Johnson has been a part of the EPA for 24 years, holding several senior level positions including Assistant Administrator of EPA’s Office of Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances (OPPTS). He has received numerous awards and commendations, capped in 2001 when Mr. Johnson received the Presidential Rank Award for distinguished executives for sustained extraordinary accomplishments, the highest award that can be given to a civilian federal employee.

Prior to joining the EPA, Mr. Johnson served as the Director of Operations at Hazelton Laboratories Corporation and Litton Bionetics, Inc. He received a B.A. in Biology from Taylor University in Indiana and an M.S. in Pathology from George Washington University, Washington, DC.
