Student Fine Art Activities

DoDDS-Europe offers students a variety of state level activities and academic competitions. These activities are designed to enhance and extend classroom instruction and provide students with the opportunity to apply their academic skills in reality-based situations. The following activities are currently being sponsored by DoDDS-Europe:

Creative Connections
Oberwesel, Germany | February 8-13, 2009 Ten workshops in the visual and performing arts are offered to 150 students. Workshops may include such diverse subjects as Drawing, Oil Pastel Painting, Sculpture, Modern Dance, Strings, Drama, Music Composition, Video Productions, and Show Choir, taught by experts in the field. The student registration fee is approximately Euro 200. (There is no drama this year but it will be reinstated in subsequent years.)
Jazz Seminar
Heidelberg, Germany | January 10-15, 2009 This big band swing style seminar incorporates 28 student instrumentalists and 6-8 vocal soloists who focus on the study of jazz. The students, under the direction of major jazz musicians/educators, have the opportunity to listen, read, perform, and improvise jazz music. The culminating activity for the seminar is a series of jazz concerts presented by the students for the local community and schools. The activity is usually held in January with the site rotating to locations throughout Europe each year. The students pay a registration fee of approximately 275 Euro for lodging and meals.
Showcase Anthology Production
Wiesbaden Area Hotel | March 2-6, 2008 SHOWCASE is an anthology of original art and literature submitted by DoDDS-Europe students from pre-school through grade 12. From the beginning of the school year teachers collect student works to be submitted to their District Superintendent Office Screening Committee, which meets in early April. The committees screen over 4,000 student submissions to determine the most worthy and publishable works to be submitted to the SHOWCASE Production Board. In March the Production Board, composed of representative art and literature teachers from each district, selects the student works to be included in the anthology and prepares the publication for printing. The fi nal printing is accomplished in May followed by distribution to the schools and communities by June Interested students should consult with their local art and literature teachers regarding the process for submitting their work for publication.
Honors Music Festival
Oberwesel/Wiesbaden | March 22-27, 2009 The Honors Music program offers 60 student instrumentalists and 80 vocalists the opportunity to gather together for 5 days to study a variety of band and choral music. After a period of intensive rehearsals conducted by two of America’s finest conductors, a concert is presented in one of the major European concert halls, featuring a combined band and choral finale. The large audience consists of Americans and Germans from the local communities. Students pay a registration fee of approximately 200 Euro for lodging and meals.
Drama Festival
Baumholder, Germany | February 1-6, 2009 Drama Festival features drama students presenting scenes, in a variety of categories, from various productions. Workshops in aspects of drama productions are also part of the festival activities. Students participate as teams from their local schools. Students pay a registration fee of approximately $200.00 for lodging and meals. For more information, students should contact the local Drama Teacher.
