BLM’s “Take it Outside” Offers Free Fishing Day Program

The U.S. Dept. of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Needles Field Office is partnering with San Bernardino County Parks (Moabi Regional Park) and the California Department of Fish and Game to provide a free fishing experience for 30 families on Saturday, Sept. 27.  On Free Fishing Day, the state of California will wave fishing-license requirements, while San Bernardino County will waive day-use fees for 30 families at the regional park.

BLM also will provide a limited amount of rods and tackle for the young anglers on a first-come, first-served basis.  (All fishing equipment used by participants must be legal in the state of California.)  All children must be more than five years old and accompanied by a parent or guardian.  The Free Fishing Day program cannot accommodate organized groups.

Parents of prospective participants must apply beginning Sept. 15.  Applications are available online at www.blm.gov/ca/needles (click on “Free Fishing Day”), or by calling Murl Shaver, (760) 326-7000.

BLM’s "Take It Outside" program promotes and supports outdoor activities and experiences of children on the public lands. The program strives to improve the health of our nation's children, families, and communities, while at the same time developing the next generation of public land stewards.

The Moabi Regional Park is located on the California side of the Colorado River immediately north of Interstate 40.  The park encompasses public land managed by the BLM; fish include striped bass, large and small-mouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, crappie, and carp.  Attractions along the Colorado River from Lake Mohave to Parker Dam include a variety of birds and animals, historical sites, marshes, mountain peaks, and canyons.
