BLM Offers Free Guided Hikes at Sacramento River Natural Area

Outstanding vistas of the Sacramento River and surrounding volcanic landscapes will highlight a free guided hike to be led by the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, Sunday, April 6, on public land just north of Red Bluff.
 
A BLM natural resource specialist will lead the four-mile trek to the Iron Canyon Rim, a rugged area that is little changed since explorer Jedediah Smith traversed the region in April of 1828.  There will be discussions about natural resources and the history of the region.
 
Reservations are required because the hike is limited to 20 participants.  Call the BLM Redding Field Office, (530) 224-2100, to reserve space.
 
Kelly Williams, the BLM’s manager of the Sacramento River Natural Area, said the four-mile loop hike will take three to four hours, including time for lunch, discussions and enjoying the view.  Hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots, bring a lunch and water and dress for variable weather.  Cameras and binoculars are recommended.
 
Williams said the rocky trail is not recommended for those who have trouble negotiating rough terrain.
 
Hikers will meet at 10 a.m. at the Iron Canyon Trailhead on State Highway 36, about 5.5 miles north of the junction with Antelope Blvd. in Red Bluff.
