New Web Site For Student Federal Jobs

There is a new website designed for high school and college students who are interested in temporary employment with the federal government. The web site is: www.studentjobs.gov. For students who are looking to get into the work force, the site lists federal job openings and provides valuable insight into the hiring process, programs, and benefits.

Career Experience Program

Career Experience is a planned and progressive educational program that offers opportunity from high school through graduate study. The program is designed to be a partnership among the student, the school, and the Corps. It combines academic classroom learning with practical on-the-job experience which provides students with a paid work experience in their field of study. For more detailed information about the Career Experience Program, visit our page on Student Career Experience Program Guidance.

Eligibility. The program is open to full-time high school, undergraduate, and graduate college students in accredited educational institutions. Students must be at least 16 years of age, maintain good academic records, and be a U.S. citizen.

Work periods. There are many ways to work in the Career Experience Program. Some schedules may alternate full-time work with full-time semesters or quarters of study. Others may provide for part-time work with parallel periods of study. The District, schools, and students design schedules that work best for them.

Pay and benefits. Career Experience students start earning a salary from the first day. The initial rate of pay depends upon current education and work experience. As the student advances in responsibility, pay reflects the individual's talents and contributions. Career Experience students receive benefits right from the start. They are automatically eligible for paid vacation days, holidays, and sick leave; health and life insurance; retirement and investment plans; and some training and tuition assistance.

Conversion to permanent employment. Upon successful completion of all work study and degree requirements, Career Experience students are eligible for non-competitive conversion to a permanent position in the competitive service within 120 calendar days of graduation.

Student Temporary Employment Program

The Student Temporary Employment Program gives students the opportunity to acquire employment that may or may not be directly related to their education program and career goals. Appointments are made in one-year increments, and may be extended so long as the student maintains program eligibility and satisfactory work performance and conduct. Students may work part-time while attending school and full-time during summers and other vacation periods.

Eligibility. Students are eligible for the Temporary Employment Program if they:

  • are currently enrolled in good standing or have been accepted for admission as a degree-seeking student in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, or two-year or four-year college or university;
  • maintain full-time status;
  • are available to work between 12 and 25 hours per week during school sessions;
  • maintain an overall cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 or equivalent.
  • are at least 16 years of age;
  • are citizens of the United States.

Pay and benefits. As temporary employee, students start earning a salary from the first day. As the student advances in responsibility, pay reflects the individual's talents and contributions. Temporary student employees are automatically eligible for paid vacation days, holidays, and sick leave.
