Trout Fishing in America

Albert Bierstadt's Among the Sierra Nevada, California

Albert Bierstadt's Among the Sierra Nevada, California

Peer closely at Albert Bierstadt's Among the Sierra Nevada, California—you need to be standing up close and personal, because you won't find it even in a large image—and you will see, in the lower left-hand corner of the painting, hovering in a stream under the shadow of a rock outcrop, a trout. Only one trout, but he took the time to paint it. Many early American paintings feature livestock (symbols of hearth and abundance): Bierstadt's little fish completes a scene of feeding ducks and elk.

Directions to Bierstadt's landscape: second floor, east wing.

Trout fishing in the American West is one of the most beautiful things one can do in life. Fly fishing in particular allows one to get close to the environment that Bierstadt portrayed, by allowing one to pay attention to what the trout are eating to select your fly and be a part of the environment. You pay attention to the weather both acutely and from season to season and you become critically aware of the pressures on the environment depicted in Among the Sierra Nevada, California.

I've always wondered what fishing in turn of the century America must have been like without all of the environmental pressures we are currently facing which is why preservation of our National Parks must be the priority rather than using them for exploitation.

Truly amazing picture. I haven't had the pleasure of stalking trout in the US yet, spent most of my angling days in New Zealand and now in Australia. Trout fishing gets into your skin. I can only imagine what it would have been like to be one of the first to fish the location in the picture.

Great painting! Trout fishing is fun indeed. Down here in New Orleans we fish for some of the world's best speckled trout!
