Picture This: Pictures of the Day
July 14, 2006

Seems the Eye Level team wasn't the only one documenting our reopening. Take a look at this Flickr photostream.

Although not all the images are correctly identified as to title or museum, they are fun to browse and will give you a sense of what it's like to be in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Hey neat, some of those are mine.

So...when are we going to hear more about the museum, on this museum blog here?

Thank you for your comment Heather! You certainly will hear more about SAAM and the Reynolds Center on this blog. Check back this week for some interesting stories.

Great set! I especially enjoy the close-up photos of the busts/figures photographed by KPH. I think it's great that the Smithsonian American Art Museum allows patrons to take photographs within the museum.

Are there restrictions such as no flashes and no tripods? That's how it works in the Art Institute of Chicago. You can take as many photos as you want in the Art Institute as long as you don't use a flash or tripod. I can understand that restriction. A tripod is a potential hazard when carried around in a museum setting and a flash distracts other patrons. I don't buy into the argument that flashes harm the Art. If that suggestion is true, then the Art should never be placed on display in any form of man-made lighting. The constant light source outputted by gallery lighting does far more damage than the occasional flash produced by a patron's camera flash.

I'm saddened when galleries and musuems don't allow any photography. Don't they understand it's free publicity? The photographer will be sharing his/her photos with friends and family.

I'm guessing museums are nervous that people will use their photographs for professional use and thus violating copyright laws. Yet, what professional photographer will be taking photos indoors without a tripod and/or lighting equipment? C'mon now.

The only other reason I can think of is that they want people to preserve their memories of a mueseum/gallery by purchasing items in the gift shop. That's pretty low.

What's the purpose of a museum but for preservation, study, education, and enjoyment? Restricting photography lessens one's ability to retain the cultural enlightenment they experience at a museum.

Kudos to the Smithsonian American Art Museum for allowing patrons to take photographs and even celebrating those photographs on this very blog.

Unlikelymoose, photography is allowed in most of the galleries. However, there are a few restrictions. You can view them here.

I worked as a security guard at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago for a summer. They had some interesting rules. One such rule was that pens were not allowed in galleries. Only pencils were permitted. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

I also heard that the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago has a rule that you cannot sit in the bronze-cast life boat by Jeff Koons.
