| Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC September 19, 2006 Actions by Japan and Australia to Implement Resolution 1695The United States welcomes the actions taken today, September 19, by the Governments of Japan and Australia to implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1695, which was passed in response to North Korea’s missile launches. Today’s actions will help protect the Japanese and Australian financial systems from exploitation by WMD and missile proliferators and their facilitators. Japan has designated 15 entities and one individual, and Australia has designated 12 entities and one individual, for providing support to North Korean weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and missile programs. These actions are similar to those already taken by the United States under Executive Order 13382. To date, the United States has designated 12 entities and one individual under that Executive Order for contributing to proliferation or providing support for proliferators associated with North Korean WMD and missile programs. We strongly encourage other states to undertake similar actions as a way to implement Resolution 1695. Resolution 1695 requires all UN Member States, consistent with their national legal authorities and consistent with international law, to prevent missile and missile-related items, materials, goods, or technology being transferred to North Korea’s missile or WMD programs and to prevent the transfer of any financial resources in relation to the DPRK’s missile or WMD programs. The U.S. currently is reviewing additional steps the U.S. may need to take to comply fully with Resolution 1695. |
