Introduction

For well over 125 years, the artisans at Hatch Show Print in Nashville, TN, have been carving wood blocks to tell their stories and to create the one-of-kind feel of their letterpress posters. Some blocks show simple letters or numbers; others display the names of singers or traveling shows, and context of still others have been lost to history.

In the early days, hand-carved wood blocks were considered disposable and often reconstituted to make shelves to house newer blocks that were still in use. In some cases, the backs of old blocks were reused to carve images for upcoming posters.
