SAINT PAUL, MINN. – Exactly 5,220 vessels and 5,741,647 tons of cargo passed through Lock and Dam 5, located north of Winona, Minn., during the 2008 navigation season from April 11-Nov. 26. The MV James Faris was the last tow to pass through Nov. 26.

Of these vessels, 602 were commercial, 4,538 were recreational and 80 were of the other category, such as government watercraft. This number marks a decrease in navigation traffic from 2007, where 6,306 craft passed through Lock and Dam 5 – 871 of them commercial, 5,388 of them recreational and 47 other.

In 2007, the amount of commodities transported through Lock and Dam 5 was 8,490,491 tons.

Navigation statistics fluctuate from year to year, depending on the weather, the flows and the length of the navigation season.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Lock and Dam 5 in 1935 and its last major rehabilitation occurred from 1987-1998.
