Corps of Engineers awards contract to repair WPA Walls along Minnehaha Creek

2008-087; Dec. 19, 2008

SAINT PAUL, MINN. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, awarded Aspen Construction Company, of Hackensack, Minn., a $1.15 million contract this week to repair the historic walls near Minnehaha Falls.

The project includes the stabilization of approximately 1,390 linear feet of the walls, repairing failed portions of the walls and providing erosion protection for the area immediately downstream of the walls. Construction is anticipated to begin in January with wall repairs below the falls being completed by the end of April 2009 and the entire project being completed by the end of August 2009. During construction, the area will largely be restricted to visitors.

"The completion of this project will preserve an iconic landmark for the region and ensure that generations to come will be able to enjoy the area," said Aaron Snyder, Corps' project manager.

The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District in cooperation with the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board is partnering with the Corps on this project.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, serves the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response.
