Endangered Species

The ultimate goal of the Endangered Species Act is the recovery of endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems on which they depend. The cooperative efforts of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and its many partners (federal, state, and local agencies, tribal governments, conservation organizations, the business community, landowners, and concerned citizens) are critical to the recovery of listed species. Recovery activities include conducting field investigations, consulting with developers to minimize threats to wildlife and their habitats, and providing the public with information on the protection of endangered species.

Under the federal Endangered Species Act, this program is responsible for:

• Candidate Assessment
• Listing
• Consultation
• Recovery activities

The Endangered Species program is also responsible for conservation of at-risk species so that listing under the Endangered Species Act does not become necessary.
