As the winter holiday season draws to a close, consider giving new life to greeting cards you received
in 2008 by saving them for reuse as gift tags in 2009. Simply cut out your favorite cards’ illustrations,
save them in an envelope and when the holidays roll around this year, write your recipient’s name
on the reverse side.
TEAM DNR Volunteer Training
Register Now for January 29th Workshop
DNR is seeking interested adults to become TEAM (Teaching Environmental
Awareness in Maryland) volunteers. Volunteers need only an out-going personality and a strong desire
to protect the Chesapeake Bay. No prior teaching experience is necessary. TEAM DNR offers classroom programs
on topics such as Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Streams, Oyster Reefs, Horseshoe Crabs and Chesapeake Waterman.
The next workshop will be held on Friday, January 29, 2009 in Annapolis from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The Future of Maryland’s Working Forests
In a recent issue of The Natural Resource Magazine, Maryland State Forester Steven W. Koehn, discusses
the challenges of sustaining one of our most precious resources. “Our forests are critical to the health
of 25 watersheds that provide drinking water to 3.4 million people. Forest lands serve as a natural filter
and reservoir for water, helping save billions of dollars in filtration and storm water control costs,”
writes Koehn. “The consequences of the loss of our wooded lands are significant.”

Let’s Go Outside
It’s officially winter. There may be winter precipitation, snow, sleet, or bright sunny days. Regardless
of the weather, it is a great time to take the family, especially the children, outdoors and enjoy nature -
even if it is only a few minutes a day in your backyard habitat or local nature center grounds.
DNR recommends seasonal activities the kids will love while learning more about the natural world.
Veterans Partnership
It is estimated that of Maryland’s approximately 480,000 veterans, up to 50 percent may have a disability
which can put strain on obtaining adequate employment, healthcare, housing, benefits and transitional
services, as well as the utilization of public recreational-therapeutic services.
With this in mind, take a look at some of the services that DNR offers:
- Access Maryland Pass Application, presented by the Maryland Park Service, may provide free entry for a Maryland disabled pass-holder and one guest, to more than 60 Maryland Parks.
- Complimentary hunting licenses may be obtained through Licensing Service Centers for former prisoners of war and 100 percent service-connected disability American veterans.
- Complimentary tidal fishing licenses are available to residents and non-residents who are legally blind and former prisoners of war. Chesapeake Bay Sport-fishing licenses are also available to people who are blind.
