A model for integrating basic and clinical investigation of insulin action with the study and practice of CAM. The interaction of genes, environment, behavior, and physiological homeostasis predispose to diseases related to insulin resistance. Laboratory studies of insulin action involving signal complexity and specificity inform clinical studies of human physiology related to metabolic, vascular, and central actions of insulin. This goal of this research is to improve diagnosis, prevention, and therapy of diseases associated with insulin resistance such as diabetes. Likewise, laboratory studies investigating the molecular mechanisms of CAM modalities including nutritional supplements have the same goal of improving diagnosis, prevention, and therapy of important public health problems.
