Air Evacuation to Walter Reed |
If you are going to be air evacuated to Walter Reed you need to receive proper authorization
from your doctor and the Air Evacuation Office in your local Medical Treatment Facility (MTF).
Your doctor needs to prepare Form 602 (soon to be replaced by AF 3899), complete a a Narrative
Summary (specify Air Evac), sign it and give it to you, so that you or those who are assisting
you may take it to the Air Evacuation Office. At this time you will be 'regulated', or put into
the system for air evacuation. Very likely, you may be required also to attend a briefing in
your Air Evacuation Office.
|
Any treatment or medication that your doctor wants you to take or receive on the flight must be
listed on the front of Form 602, even if you plan to self medicate.
|
Medication requirements are:
- CONUS= 5-day supply of medications issued from your local pharmacy
- OCONUS= 7-day supply of medications issued from your local pharmacy
|
Your Air Evacuation Office will confirm if you are in the confirmed travel list, usually
NLT 10:00 PM the night before flight.
|
Big incoming days for Walter Reed are Wednesday and Saturday, but we receive patients almost
every day.
|
During travel to and from the airport and while on board a Medical Evacuation airplane, your
medical care will be provided by medical personnel staffing the ambulance or the airplane. Please
listen carefully and follow their instructions since they have specialized training in transporting
patients with unique needs. Just like flying a commercial airplane, seat belts or other forms of
physical restraint are required at all times during the flight to ensure your safety. Air turbulence
can cause major disruption onboard a plane transporting patients and you must follow instruction
carefully since the onboard medical staff is highly experienced in dealing with emergencies.
|
Upon arrival to Washington, a military shuttle will meet you at Andrew's Air Force Base and bring
you to WRAMC. If you are not staying on the Self Care Unit, there will be a van available at WRAMC
to take you to the Mologne House,
Guest House ,
or the
Walter Reed Inn.
Taxi services are available for transport to off-post lodging facilities.
|
Many patients are 'regulated' as inpatients (2A, 2B), but often can be managed as outpatients
and do not necessarily meet the criteria for inpatient care.
|
All incoming Air Evacuated patients who have been 'regulated' as inpatients must be evaluated
by a physician upon arrival to Walter Reed. The evaluating physician will determine if you require
admission. Please refer to information on what to expect
while hospitalized at Walter Reed.
