GRAPHIC NOVELS & THE CIP PROGRAM
A graphic novel is defined as a monograph intended to be complete in a finite number of volumes (usually one) and whose characters and actions are portrayed in a series of panel drawings, with dialogue presented in speech balloons or their equivalent. Graphic novels are within scope for the Cataloging in Publication Program. However, due to the nature of these publications, the CIP Data Application has been changed to include a specific question for publishers - Graphic novel? Yes __ No __ In addition, our catalogers have been instructed to contact graphic novel publishers, as needed, if they feel that additional information is necessary to create an accurate and complete catalog record. Publishers of graphic novels are asked to comply with such requests for additional information whenever possible
