Photograph by Rod March, September 1, 1996.Photograph looking toward the Gulkana Glacier terminus from just below the
Phelan Creek stream-gaging station, USGS station 15478040, on September 1, 1996. The site
is about 1 kilometer downstream from the present glacier terminus. As can be seen, the
channel bed is composed of typical ground moraine material, poorly sorted gravel and small
boulders, which is subject to frequent changes during high flows. The mean discharge on
the day of this photo was about 9 cubic meters per second (runoff of about 24
millimeters), a value typical of mid-summer, but high for early September. The cableway
and small handcar were used for making discharge measurements when the flow is too deep and
fast for wading. Since this photo was taken, the cableway and handcar have
been replaced by a lighter weight, unmanned cableway at the same location.
The round structure to the right of the creek in the photograph houses
the instrumentation and satellite telemetry for the stream-gaging station. (Click on image
