  • Assessment OF learning to determine if learning has occurred.
  • and
  • Assessment FOR learning as an instructional tool for use while learning is occurring.

In assessment FOR learning the assessment purpose is to provide teachers and students with information they need during the learning process to make decisions that will bring about more learning.

Assessment FOR learning can be used to:

  • Diagnose student needs.
  • Plan next steps in instruction.
  • Provide students with feedback they can use to improve the quality of their work.
  • Help students see and feel in control of their progress toward success.
