Island Creek Project Cooperation Agreement Signing set for Friday in Logan

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.... The Island Creek Local Protection Project Cooperation Agreement signing will be held Friday, Jan. 25, at 10:00 a.m. at the Logan Middle School in Logan, W.Va. Congressman Nick Rahall II will be the keynote speaker.

The Island Creek Local Protection Project includes the widening of the channel for 3,600 feet upstream, where it converges with the Guyandotte River. It will also include a flood warning system that will alert residents to rising waters. Once completed, the project will help protect an estimated 252 area homes and businesses against 20-year flood events.

"The Island Creek Project has become a labor of love for me – one that Senator Byrd, the Army Corps of Engineers and I have been strategically planning for years," Congressman Rahall said.  "Projects like these may not be glamorous, but they play an essential role in the

development of our state. They are the foundation from which we grow and thrive, and without them, our communities could not stand."

Other partners for the project included the Logan County Commission, the W.V. Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the W.V. Conservation Agency.
