Project and Contents Description
This digital collection highlights the art work, correspondence, and research of the Ridgway brothers, John and Robert, late nineteenth century naturalists and illustrators of the American West. Robert Ridgway served as the zoologist of the 1867-69 United States Geological Fortieth Parallel Survey when he was only 17 years old. Collection includes the Ornithology volume written by Ridgway and printed as part III of the Survey's official report.

Robert's younger brother, John, rose to prominence in the field of scientific illustration, holding the positions of chief illustrator for the United States Geological Survey, and scientific illustrator for the California Institute of Technology and the Carnegie Institution.
