 Overview

The U.S. Government is concerned that the ongoing outbreaks of avian influenza in birds have the potential to turn into a human influenza pandemic that would have significant global health, economic, and social consequences. Funding for implementing the national strategy requested by President Bush and approved by Congress includes $251 million to detect and contain outbreaks before they spread around the world.

Continuous global surveillance and monitoring of influenza is essential. Rapid detection of unusual influenza outbreaks, isolation of possible pandemic viruses and the immediate notification of national and international health authorities is critical for mounting a timely and effective response to a pandemic potential.
