6: Complete Testing
SATs ACTs MEDICAL EXAM CFA (FITNESS ASSESSMENT)
Standardized Tests
(SAT/ACT)
Candidates must take the standardized timed version of either the American
College Testing (ACT) Assessment Program exam or the SAT Reasoning Test. We recommend that candidates
take both tests.
For more information, see http://www.collegeboard.org.
West Point does not accept non-standardized scores for academic evaluation. ACT and SAT scores are updated electronically. By agreeing to electronic test score updates, you can speed the application process.
DEADLINE: Candidates should check with their Guidance Office for the dates and deadlines for the ACT and the SAT examinations. The final date for taking the ACT for admission to the next West Point class is normally the scheduled February ACT examination. The final date for taking the SAT examination is normally the January SAT test date.
Although not required for admission, Advanced Placement Examinations are considered in several subject areas to include mathematics, physics, chemistry, history, and social sciences. Results are evaluated for award of formal credit for course completion or scheduling individuals into higher level sections or classes.
SAT Reasoning Test
The SAT Reasoning test is administered at test centers throughout the world. A testing
fee and advance registration of several weeks are required. For information
on SAT testing in your area, consult any high school counselor or write
to: College Board ATP, Rosedale Road, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6200.
To ensure West Point receives your test results, list the SAT college code
number for USMA (2924) on the registration form.
To ensure your Congressional representatives receive your test results, follow one of these procedures:
- contact your Congressional representatives to obtain their College Board code number and record each number on the registration form;
- or if your Congressional representatives do not have a specific College Board code number, contact the College Board at (609) 921-9000 to obtain the proper code number and place it on your registration form. Your test results will be mailed directly to your congressional representatives.
American College Testing
The ACT is administered at test centers throughout the world. A testing
fee and advance registration of several weeks are required. For information
on ACT testing in your area, consult any high school counselor or write
to: Registration Department, ACT Assessment Program, Post Office Box 414,
Iowa City, Iowa 52243-0001.
To ensure that West Point receives your test results, list the ACT College code number for USMA (2976) on the registration form. To ensure your Congressional representatives receive your test results, also record special code number 7000 on the registration folder (one for each Member of Congress desiring your results). You will receive a sealed copy of your ACT score report. Mail it to your local congressional representative.
Attention USMA Class of 2012 (and later):
Effective immediately, candidates for the USMA Class of 2012 (i.e. entering USMA in 2008 and later) are required to submit a writing score with their SAT and/or ACT exam. The SAT requires the writing exam as part of the test itself. However, the writing portion on the ACT is currently optional. If you register for the ACT, you must select the “ACT Plus Writing” exam. If you have already registered for an upcoming ACT and did not select the “ACT Plus Writing” exam, you should immediately contact ACT (319-337-1270) to add the writing portion. For more information, please visit http://www.actstudent.org/faq/answers/changebefore.html.
Take Qualifying Medical
Exam
Although medical evaluation standards differ among the various commissioning
programs of the Armed Services, only one medical examination is needed to
meet the application requirements of all service academies and the four-year
ROTC scholarship programs. If you are a competitive candidate, you will
receive instructions for taking the qualifying medical examination directly
from the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB),
8034 Edgerton Drive, Suite 132, U.S.A.F. Academy, CO 80840-2200, at the
appropriate time. You may be scheduled at an Army, Air Force, Naval, or
civilian facility near your home. DODMERB will forward your medical test
results to you. Questions on your medical status should be directed to DODMERB
at (719) 333-3562. Please Note: Tattoos and brands visible on the neck,
face or head are prohibited. Tattoos that are prejudicial to good order
and discipline and/or detract from a soldierly appearance are prohibited.

Take The Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA)
Satisfactory completion of the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) is one of the requirements for admission to the United States Military Academy. The Candidate Fitness Assessment consists of six physical and motor fitness events designed to measure muscular strength and endurance, cardio-respiratory endurance, power, balance, and agility. It is used to determine if a candidate possesses the stamina and movement skills required to successfully complete the physical program at the Academy and perform the duties required of commissioned officers in the uniformed services.
CFA Score Comparison:
Below is a simple chart of the 100-point (maximum score) score for each of the events for the CFA, with the exception of the Pull-up/Flexed Arm Hang events. Please feel free to reference it to both practice and prepare for these events, and also so you will know what to expect when you arrive for the CFA.
Score | BB Throw | Pull-Up | S. Run | M. Sit-Ups | Push-Ups | 1-Mile Run | |
Male | 100 | 102 feet | 18 reps | 7.8 sec. | 95 reps | 75 reps | 5:20 min. |
Female | 100 | 66 feet | 7 reps | 8.6 sec. | 95 reps | 50 reps | 6:00 min. |
The results of this test are very important in the overall assessment of your admission file, so you should become familiar with the six events in the Candidate Fitness Assessment and practice. The examination consists of the following six events:
- Basketball throw
- Pull-ups (men & women) or flexed-arm hang (women)
- Shuttle run
- Modified sit-ups
- Push-ups
- One mile run
