Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: Geographic extent of the Herrin Coal in Indiana
Abstract:
The ArcView shapefile contains a representation of the crop of the Herrin Coal in Indiana. It can be shown in relation to coal geology and other relevant themes in the Illinois Basin.
Supplemental_Information:
The Illinois and Kentucky portions of the Herrin outcrop were generated by Karen Like at the Indiana Geological Survey and can be contacted using the point of contact information below. The Indiana portion of the outcrop was generated by William Andrews.

  3. What does it look like?

  4. Does the data set describe conditions during a particular time period?

    Calendar_Date: Jul-1999

  5. What is the general form of this data set?

    Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map

  6. How does the data set represent geographic features?

    1. How are geographic features stored in the data set?

This is a Vector data set. It contains the following vector data types (SDTS terminology):

      • GT-polygon composed of chains (111)

    2. What coordinate system is used to represent geographic features?

Horizontal positions are specified in geographic coordinates, that is, latitude and longitude. Latitudes are given to the nearest .01. Longitudes are given to the nearest .01. Latitude and longitude values are specified in decimal degrees.

The horizontal datum used is North American Datum 1927.
      The ellipsoid used is CLARKE1866.
The semi-major axis of the ellipsoid used is 6378206.4.
The flattening of the ellipsoid used is 1/294.98.

  7. How does the data set describe geographic features?

    ibhecrp.dbf
    Shapefile Attribute Table

    Coal
Yes coal present, no coal not present

    Character field

    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Areas defined as "no coal" or "Insufficient Data" are where the *position* of the coals is identifiable using the surrounding stratigraphy, but there is no coal preserved in the rock record. They are areas within the outcrop extent of the coal beds where we have data essentially demonstrating zero coal thickness. In addition, given that these regional datasets are a compilation of data generated by each of the three states (Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana) within the Illinois basin, some dIscrepencies between states may exist. For instance, "Channels" have been defined and are represented in Illinois and Kentucky but have been extracted out of the coal extent in Indiana.

Why was the data set created?

The Nation's coal resources are being assessed by the United States Geological Survey. A fundamental component for this assessment work is to compile digital geologic and geographic data into a Geographic Information System (GIS). The GIS allows for the spatial integration of data layers, resulting in the ability to display, analyze, and query data to answer complex geo-spatial questions concerning coal resource occurrence.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    ilhecrp (source 1 of 3)
Illinois State Geological Survey, 1998, Herrin crop: United States Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia.

    (source 3 of 3)
    Andrews, William, 2001, (unpublished work).

    Type_of_Source_Media: interpretive
    Source_Contribution:
The Indiana portion of the Herrin coal outcrop was generated by creating an outcrop extent which was exactly halfway between the Springfield and Danville coal outcrops.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: Aug-1999 (process 1 of 1)
The Indiana portion of the outcrop was generated by finding the mean distance between the Springfield and Danville outcrops by William Andrews. The state lines were then added to created the extent.
