Why was the data set created?

The Nation's coal resources are being reassessed by the USGS. This assessment identifies and characterizes the coal beds and coal zones that will provide the bulk of the nation's coal-derived energy during the next century. This assessment is different from previous large-scale USGS assessments because files and databases are being stored in a digital format and are being analyzed using a Geographic Information System (GIS).

    Date: 1998 (process 1 of 1)
    The ultimate source of the data used to create this TIFF image is 1:250,000 scale 3 arc-second Digtital Elevation Model (DEM) data. The individual DEMs were converted to ARC/INFO lattices with the DEMLATTICE command and then mosaiced using GRID's MOSAIC command. This lattice was then projected (PROJECT) to specific Lambert parameters. Further processing in ARC/INFO using the GRIDIMAGE command and manipulation in Adobe Photoshop created the shaded-relief image.

    1:250000 scale 3 arc-second Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data. Some elevation data at the edges of individual tiles were processed for edge-matching purposes.
