Title:
Geologic map datasets of the Custer and Gallatin National Forests of South-central Montana, in ARC/INFO format: Absaroka-Beartooth study area
Abstract:
The digital ARC/INFO databases included in this directory provide a geologic map GIS database of the Absaroka-Beartooth study area (ABSA), a tract of approximately 1.4 million acres of National Forest land in southwestern Montana. The ABSA is adjacent to the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, and includes southeastern parts of Gallatin National Forest and western parts of the Custer National Forest. The geologic map was originally prepared to accompany a U.S. Geological Survey evaluation of the mineral resource potential within the ABSA. The results of this mineral resource assessment were published as U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-207 and the geologic map was plate 1 of this report. The enclosed ARC/INFO database was created directly from the base materials used to create the geologic map (plate 1) in the ABSA report.

Why was the data set created?

This dataset was developed to provide a geologic map GIS database of the Custer and Gallatin National Forests in the Absaroka-Beartooth study area for use in spatial analysis by a variety of users.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

Mineral resources of the Absaroka-Beartooth study area, Hammarstrom and others, 1993 (source 1 of 1)
Hammarstrom, J.M., Zientek, M.L., and Elliott, J.E, 1993, Mineral resource assessment of the Absaroka-Beartooth study area, Custer and Gallatin National Forests, Montana.: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 93-207, U.S. Geological Survey, Denver, Colorado.

    Type_of_Source_Media: paper
    Source_Scale_Denominator: 126,720
Source_Contribution: New and compiled geologic mapping

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1999 (process 1 of 1)
The original base materials used to create plate 1 of USGS Open-File Report 93-207 were digitally scanned by Jeff Silkwood of the USDA Forest Service in Missoula, Montana. Mr. Silkwood then attributed the digital linework and polygons in ARC/INFO. The lines and polygons attributes were checked against the orginal and corrected to match the published paper map as neccessary. Shadeset and lineset attributes were added in ARC. This ARC database was further edited by Gregory Green to correct further minor deviations from the published map. The digital database was quality checked against original materials by Bradley Van Gosen.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

    finished

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

    manual check against orginals

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?
