This is a Point data set. It contains the following vector data types (SDTS terminology):
Horizontal positions are specified in geographic coordinates, that is, latitude and longitude. Latitudes are given to the nearest 0.0001. Longitudes are given to the nearest 0.0001. Latitude and longitude values are specified in Decimal degrees.

This report was prepared to document the chemical composition of sediments and soils in the Coeur d'Alène (CdA) drainage basin in northern Idaho. These compositions are of interest because of the potential for human and wildlife health impacts from high metal contents of some sediments and soils from over 100 years of mining activity.

Attribute accuracy was verified by manual comparison of the source data with hardcopy printouts, x-y plots and on screen evaluations.
Beginning in 1993, samples were collected from selected sites on
modern floodplains of the South Fork and its tributaries, the
lowermost North Fork, the main stem of the Cd'A River, and one site
on the lower St. Joe River, in north Idaho. Sample sites were plotted
on 1:24,000-scale topographic maps by matching identifiable features
on the map to corresponding features on the ground, and (or) by
measuring or triangulating from such features. Locations are
considered accurate to within about 50 ft. depending on
the distinctiveness of the site and (or) its distance from features
recognized on both the ground and the map (Appendix B, site-location
method "a"). The latitude and longitude of each sample site was
then measured from the coordinate grid of the topographic base map
(in degrees, minutes, and seconds). These coordinates were
arithmetically converted to decimal degrees (to 4 decimal places),
and used to construct computer-generated maps of sample locations,
plotted on digital topographic maps.
Reference locations on riverbanks at opposite ends of river-channel
drill transects were staked and flagged. The reference locations
were marked on 1:24,000-scale maps, as described above. Drill holes
in the channel of the river were located by compass-and-tape
measurements from the reference locations. Cross-sectional sketches,
showing the measurements were made in field notebooks. Sample sites
along on-shore extensions of the river transects were located by
compass-and-tape measurements from the reference locations (Appendix
B, site-location method "b").
Beginning in 1996, sample sites were located with the NAVSTAR Global
Positioning System (GPS) Precise Positioning Service (PPS), using a
PLGR receiver for Federal Civilian Users (Appendix B, site-location
method "c"). Locations determined in this way are considered accurate
to within about 10m (33 ft).
Point data is given in latitude longitude (decimal degrees).
